汉语成语绝大多数来自于浩繁的古代文化典籍和诗词文章。它们有的是历史史实的概括，有的是古代战争的记叙，有的是传说故事的精髓，也有的是诗词文章的摘取或节录，还有一些成语则来自于民间的口头流传等等。汉语成语的上述浓厚的文化色彩和历史内涵，使得它能够以简洁、固定的形式与和谐的韵律，准确、生动地传达丰富多彩的语言信息，可谓言简而意丰。古往今来，成语被广泛地运用于口语和书面语当中。
成语的广泛应用，也带来了成语词典编纂事业的兴旺和发达。但是，在当今汗牛充栋的成语词典园地中，以规范见长的词典大多是重源流而轻实用；同时，那些以实用见长的成语词典则又重功能而过于简略。我们编纂的这部《成语大词典》力求充分汲取前人和同行之经验，取各家之长为我用，努力做到规范与实用齐备，详尽与简明兼顾，功能与经典并举。
本词典共收词目12000余条，其中绝大部分是运用广泛、为人熟知的成语，同时也酌收了一些其他熟语。为了使广大具有中等或中等以上文化程度的读者，尤其是广大学生更好地理解和应用成语，本词典对所收的成语进行了全方位的解释和说明，最多时包括注音、释义、出处、例句、近义（成语）、反义（成语）、辨析、提示、用法、连用、也作等，内容极为丰富。
本词典的另一个显著特点是它的功能性和实用性。通过援引古代和近现代的经典著作揭示成语的本源，阐释成语的含义、用法和流变，并提供了该成语在现代汉语中的使用范例。同时，全书还配以大量具有诠释成语内涵作用的精美插图，使之不仅可以用作查考的工具书，而且还具有很高的阅读和欣赏价值。

The vast majority of Chinese idioms come from numerous ancient cultural classics and poetry articles. Some of them are summaries of historical facts, some are narrations of ancient wars, some are the essence of legends, some are excerpts or excerpts of poems and articles, and some idioms come from folk oral traditions and so on.
